Regulation (EU) 2017/2226 established a centralized system for recording the entry and exit of third-country nationals crossing the external Schengen borders for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The introduced innovation aims to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of border controls. This system, which is scheduled to become operational on October 12, will apply both to third-country nationals who require an entry visa for short stays and to those exempt from it, and will generally replace the stamping of passports, while providing reliable data on the crossing of external borders. The new system will not apply to third-country nationals holding a long-stay national visa and residence permit issued by Schengen States, nor to citizens of San Marino, the Principality of Andorra, and the Principality of Monaco, Vatican City, as well as citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Swiss Confederation, crew members, Sovereigns, Heads of State, and members of official delegations.
