On 12th February 2026, an event dedicated to showcasing Italian excellence in the fields of fashion and design was held in Mumbai, organised by the Consulate General of Italy and hosted at the prestigious Poltrona Frau showroom, located in the heart of the city’s vibrant cultural and creative district, Ballard Estate.
During the evening, the new collection “Gate to India” by Italian designer Elio Ferraro was presented in an exclusive preview. The collection draws inspiration from India’s rich textile and artisanal heritage and was developed in collaboration with the local partner Kaysons Sarees, renowned for its long-standing expertise in handcrafted fabrics. The result is an original synthesis where Italian sartorial creativity meets the refined tradition of Indian textile craftsmanship.
Opening the event, the Consul General of Italy in Mumbai, Walter Ferrara, highlighted how initiatives of this kind embody the very spirit of Italian cultural diplomacy:
“This event represents the essence of our diplomatic mission: building bridges between cultures and fostering a shared vision in every field of bilateral cooperation. When Italian creative spirit engages with India’s extraordinary artisanal traditions, we witness something that goes beyond a fashion collection: a collaboration capable of expressing common values and a shared vision for the future.”
The initiative brought together numerous representatives from Mumbai’s economic, cultural and institutional communities, further confirming the city’s role as a natural hub for creative dialogue between Italy and India. In this context, Italian excellence—deeply rooted in tradition yet constantly oriented towards innovation—finds a natural affinity with a city distinguished by its vibrant creative energy and strong appreciation for artisanal craftsmanship.
The event also forms part of a particularly dynamic phase in Italy–India bilateral relations, in which sectors such as fashion, design and furniture are emerging as increasingly promising areas of cooperation. Taking place on the eve of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, the world’s leading international event dedicated to design and furniture, initiatives like this help strengthen the presence and visibility of Made in Italy in India, while fostering new opportunities for collaboration between businesses, designers and cultural actors in both countries.
By bringing together tradition and contemporary innovation, the collaboration between Italian designers and Indian craftsmanship demonstrates how creativity can serve as a powerful tool of cultural and economic diplomacy, capable of connecting different societies and generating new perspectives for cooperation.
