According to Regulation (EU) 2019/1157, laying down provisions on strengthening the security of identity cards and residence permits issued to EU citizens and their family members, it has been provided that as of August 3, 2023, Residence Cards for family members of EU citizens in paper format (Carte di Soggiorno per familiari di cittadini UE in formato cartaceo) will cease to be valid.
Holders of the aforementioned cards who have not yet converted their document are required to obtain a “Tourism/EU Family” C visa (90 days multiple entries) if provided the right to do so by ttheir nationality in order to enter Italy and regulate their position.
The Visa will be issued free of charge by filling their application at the VFS centers of residence or alternatively at the Consulate General of Italy in Mumbai. In this regard, we inform you that it will be possible to request a priority appointment at the VFS by writing an email to visa.mumbai@esteri.it with the subject: “Sostituzione Carta Soggiorno cartaceo”.
This is without prejudice to the possibility for foreign citizens who have already applied to update their title and whose application has not yet been finalized, to re-enter the country via direct flight by showing the receipt of renewal of their residence permit.
